Famed US ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson, who died while skiing down Mount Manaslu on Monday, September 26, has been cremated at Swayambhunath hill on Sunday.

After two days of intense search, rescuers found the 49-year-old climber’s body several hundred metres below the summit of the eighth highest mountain.

Her partner and fellow ski mountaineer Jim Morrison accompanied her during the expedition. They reached the summit together, but only Morrison could safely return to the base camp.

He wrote in an Instagram post that Hilaree’s last rites followed a Buddhist Puja blessing near the oldest Buddhist stupa of Kathmandu valley.

Hilaree’s Sherpa friends and Buddhist Lamas were present.

Morrison wrote: “We will collect her ashes and I will travel directly to the boys in Telluride. It should be a beautiful tribute to Hilaree’s family and I feel this is how she would want things performed.”

Hilaree’s brother Stan and several friends were also present at the ceremony.

Describing Swayambhunath as “self existent one”, Morisson wrote that “[last rites at a place like this would be] fitting for a woman of Hilaree’s existence. Her radiance will continue to affect us all.”
