Nepal Minute - out of the ordinary

Crime

Two Chinese nationals have been arrested and sent to judicial custody on the charge of trafficking three Nepali girls to Laos and compelling them to engage in illicit cyber businesses.

Chen Yang, 30, a permanent resident of Sichuan, and Ruan Chaohong, 33, a permanent resident of Fujian, were arrested after the girls filed a complaint against them.

The girls were lured to work in online sales marketing in Laos with free visas and free tickets. The fraudsters cheated the victims, saying that they would earn between $1,000 and $1,500.

The victims were sent to Laos via Indian cities of Siliguri, Kolkata, and the Thai capital Bangkok on September 2. Once in Laos, the girls were kept in an IT company.

They were given mobile phones and laptop computers and asked to create fake accounts on Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram and chat with unknown people in the United States to make friends.

In a statement on Thursday, the Nepal Police’s Anti-Human Trafficking Bureau said the victims were asked to send fake links to the Americans to lure them to invest in illegal gambling in bitcoins.

The victims were forced to work for two months without remuneration. They were compelled to do the jobs and were tortured. The girls, who had paid about Rs400,000 to the fraudsters for the jobs, returned home with the help of other Nepalis and parents in Nepal, on November 11.

The police said the Chinese men were arrested from the Tribhuvan International Airport and Thamel.
