The Kathmandu District Court on Tuesday took the statement of cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane who has been accused of raping a minor girl.

The detention hearing on the case, scheduled to start on Tuesday, would now take place on Tuesday as recording the former national cricket team captain’s statement took much longer.

It took a whole day to take the statement, so the detention hearing will start only on Wednesday, said Deepak Dahal, the Information Officer at Kathmandu District Court.

Judge Madhav Prasad Ghimire is presiding over the hearing on the case. After the hearing, the court will decide whether to keep Lamichhane in custody for investigation or leave him on bail.

The Kathmandu District Attorney’s Office filed a charge sheet against Lamichhane on Monday in the court, demanding a jail term of 12 years and appropriate compensation on the charge of raping a 17-year-old girl.

The district attorney's office filed the case under Section 219 of the Criminal Code Act 2017 based on the police investigation of the rape charge.
