A woman, injured while trying to rescue a man who set his body on fire, has died during treatment in Pokhara. 

Superintendent Ajay KC of District Police Office Kaski said Sangita Sapkota, a resident of Khunkhola of Pokhara Metropolitan City-13 succumbed to burn injuries during treatment at Gandaki Hospital on Monday morning.

Sapkota sustained severe burn injuries as she rushed to save Krishna Bahadur Chhetri who set himself on fire in the bathroom of his rented house.  

Neighbours rushed the two to Gandaki Hospital and admitted them to the ICU section with critical burn injuries. 

SP KC said the police were investigating how the woman who went to rescue the burning man sustained far more severe burns. 

Sapkota suffered 80 per cent burns compared to Chhetri’s 25 per cent, said SP KC, quoting doctors involved in their treatment. He said that the incident was reported to the police only after the injured were taken to the hospital. Chhetri’s condition is said to be stable.

“We are in the preliminary investigation; the family has also come forward. We are gathering information to find out what happened,” SP KC said, “We are investigating this case from all possible angles.”
