Nepal Minute - out of the ordinary

Current Affairs

India’s Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi is facing criticisms from netizens and his political opponents after one of his party colleagues played Nepal’s national anthem at his party’s gathering in Wasim, Maharastra.

After video clips of Nepali national anthem being played at the party’s Wasim gathering as part of Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra went viral, India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and workers have taken to social media to slam the Congress leader.

Indian media reports say the silly mistake or goof-up happened on Wednesday, November 16, when Gandhi concluded his remarks and the organisers signalled the audio in-charge to play India’s national anthem.

However, the person playing the audio made a mistake and played Nepal’s national anthem – ‘Sayou thunga phoola haami’. Once Gandhi and other leaders realised that the song was not what they wanted to hear, they reminded the audio personnel to play the right song.

And finally, the Indian national anthem – ‘Jana gana mana’ – is played.

NepalMinute.com did a quick research to find out what could have gone wrong, assuming the audio in-charge was relying on YouTube – as most people these days do – to search the song.
Here’s what we found out.

If we type Rastriya Geet on YouTube, Nepali national anthem appears at the top. See screenshot:

Also if we type Rastra Gaan on YouTube, Nepali national anthem tops the search results. See screenshot:

Both Hindi and Nepali being offshoots of the ancient Sanskrit language, numerous Hindi and Nepali songs are common. They include “Rastriya Geet” and “Rastra Gaan” too. These keywords are common for both Nepali and Hindi speakers, and are used to search the national anthem.

In India, however, when searching “Rastriya Geet” or “Rastra Gaan” YouTube search results should – theoretically – show Indian national anthem. The reason why Nepali national anthem appeared on top of the sound man’s search results – or how it appeared on the playlist – remains a mystery.
