More cases of dengue have been confirmed in some settlements in Lalitpur district.

According to Dr Satish Bista, the chief of District Health Office, the cases of dengue fever have been detected in wards five and 14 of Lalitpur Metropolis and at some wards of Mahalaxmi Municipality in the district.

So far, the district reports 31 confirmed cases of dengue, according to him.

According to the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division each five cases of dengue were reported this week from Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Kapilvastu.

"With the detection of dengue patients at Manbhawan, Kumaripati, Tikhidewal and Mahalaxmi, we have launched the mosquito search and destroy campaign in the given areas," said Bista.

According to EDCD 109 cases of dengue were reported this week from across the country. Most of these cases were from Rupandehi (39 case), Sindhuli (8 cases), Gulmi (six cases), four cases from Dhading, and three each cases from Arghakhanchi, Ramechhap, Dang, Pyuthan and Lamjung.

The DHO has urged people to keep their surroundings neat and clean and intervene in stagnant ditch and water in and around the house to reduce the risk of infection.

The Lalitpur District Administration Office and the local governments have mobilised a team for the sanitation in the areas affected by dengue.

Dengue is mainly transmitted by a mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Dengue outbreaks can occur anytime, as long as the mosquitoes are still active. However, in general, high humidity and temperature are conditions that favour mosquito survival, increasing the likelihood of transmission, the World Health Organisation says.

The symptoms of dengue include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, pain in muscles and bones, rashes and back pain.

One needs to use insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and control mosquitoes inside and outside his or her home and use mosquito nets while sleeping to protect from dengue.
