The Nepal Red Cross Society has started building temporary homes for earthquake victims in the districts of Doti, Achham, and Bajhang. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has helped pay for this project.

On November 9, 2022, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck the region with its epicentre in Gairagaun of Purbi Chauki Rural Municipality-3 in Doti district, killing six people and injuring eight others. Authorities are tallying data from the affected region areas.

According to the Red Cross Society, 300 district earthquake victims received relief funds. Similarly, 4,400 tarpaulins, 2,200 quilts, and 500 dignity kits were also distributed.

Recipients of the relief supplies are said to have been selected with the help of the respective municipal level and the district disaster management committees.

According to the society, each quake family will receive a total of Rs98,600 (Rs73,600 to build a temporary shelter, Rs15,000 to purchase necessities, Rs10,000 to construct a toilet).

NRCS said arrangements have been made to deposit the amount in the individual accounts of the affected families. The quake has affected 200 families in Doti, 50 each in Achham and Bajhang. 

Among the 300 most-affected families, the society has established the policy of providing financial help of Rs15,000 to postpartum moms, pregnant women, individuals with disabilities, and vulnerable families. It has identified 200 beneficiaries in Doti and 100 each in Achham and Bajhang. 

NRCS indicated that the funds would be deposited into the beneficiaries' individual bank accounts upon the advice and coordination of local administrations.

Purbichauki the hardest hit

Purbichauki Rural Municipality of Doti district has sustained the most damage from the earthquake. Purbichauki is currently undergoing a comprehensive damage assessment. This Rural Municipality Office reported that 90 dwellings sustained severe damage, with 824 sustaining partial damage.

A survey of the damage at each local level in the district will be done over time, according to Pashupati Devi Khadka, the vice-chair of the Purbichauki Rural Municipality. The NRCS is helping to build temporary shelters for families who lost their homes, Khadka added.

Five hundred and forty-one private homes were destroyed, while 4,146 homes sustained partial damage in nine local levels in Doti district. Similarly, 47 schools, nine health posts, nine government buildings and four cultural heritages suffered damage from the earthquake in the district.

The IFRC has assured humanitarian aid to disaster-prone communities get to help them get back on their feet.
