The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has reported a profit of Rs8.5 billion in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, 2022/23.

According to the NEA’s unaudited financial results for Shrawan, Bhadra and Asoj (mid-July to mid-October), the state utility’s income from power trade, interest collection and other sources amounted to Rs32.98 billion, with the total expenditures standing Rs24.88 billion.

As per the information provided by the NEA under the right to information Act, the utility purchased power worth Rs14.15 billion from the private sector in that period.

Its net income from the supply of power generated by its own power plants and purchases from the private sector stood at Rs22.20 billion in the period. The authority made an income amounting to Rs6.17 billion from the power trade to India.

In the fiscal year 2072-73 BS (2015-16), the NEA incurred a loss of Rs8.89 billion. However, it has markedly improved its financial health since. Its annual profit in the last fiscal stood Rs16.16 billion.

NEA Executive Director Kulman Ghising pointed to intervention in power leakage, power export to India, rise in domestic consumption, and control of expenditures, among other factors, for its good financial health.
