Nepal Minute - out of the ordinary

Climate

Are you planning to head outdoors - and hike up some hills or mountains? Hold on. Weather will unlikely favour you as monsoon clouds continue to blanket much of Nepal.

They have already triggered heavy downpours in parts of central and western Nepal and the outlook is unlikely to change any time soon. Met officials say the current weather pattern may continue into the weekend.

In an update posted on Wednesday, the Meteorological Forecasting Division said that the clouds are unlikely to clear any time soon, cautioning communities living in river basins to stay alert for floods, landslides and inundations.

As the axis of the monsoon trough is shifting northwards than the normal position, it said, “the weather across Nepal will be cloudy for the next three days with chances of moderate to heavy rainfall”.

Similarly, thunderstorms and lightning are also likely for the next three days.

The Met Division said different parts of the country including the hilly areas will witness thunderstorms and lightning along with medium rainfall.

As per the Division, heavy rainfall is likely to occur in parts of Sudurpaschim, Lumbini, Bagmati, and Madhesh provinces.

Similarly, few other areas of these provinces will witness heavy rainfall on Wednesday. Heavy rainfall is also possible in Gandaki province Wednesday night.

A similar forecast is predicted on Thursday and Friday with the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorm across the country.

The Met Division has forecast chances of flood in Rapti, Babai, Kailali, Dhakeri and Khajura of Banke and Rambapur, Rani Jaruwa Nursery, Gulariya, and nearby areas of Bardiya.

It also said there is a potential risk of soil erosion, landslides, and debris flow in the hilly areas.

The Met Division has asked everyone to exercise general caution as the water level in rivers and canals may rise and the daily life/transport area may also be affected.
