The police have arrested more than 20 people from the TU Cricket Ground on suspicion of their involvement in cricket betting.

A team from Nepal Police’s Central Investigation Bureau made the arrests on Friday while the third and final ODI match between Nepal and the UAE was going on.

The spectators are believed to be live betting via apps on their mobile phones. The police have seized their mobile phones. Betting is illegal in Nepal.

Confirming the arrests, Additional Inspector General of Police Uttam Subedi at the CIB said some of those arrested had been under surveillance following a complaint earlier in the series.

“A cricket official informed us about the suspicion that some spectators were involved in betting in the first match of the series on Monday,” AIG Subedi added. “We are investigating into the case.”

The two sides entered Friday’s deciding match with the series tied at 1-1. The UAE won the opening match by 84 runs, and Nepal fought back to win the second by three wickets.

The hosts defeated the United Arab Emirates by six wickets in the third game to take the bilateral ODI series 2-1.
