Local authorities in Banke and Saptari have imposed increased security measures along the Nepal-India border to avert possible criminal activities ahead of the elections to the House of Representatives (HoR) and Provincial Assembly on November 20. 

Chief District Officer of Banke Surya Bahadur Khatri said security personnel had been deployed after sealing off the border areas for 72 hours, beginning at midnight Thursday. The district shares around 65km of an open border with the Indian territory.

According to CDO Khatri, joint patrolling of the security forces of both countries has been arranged since Thursday.  

The joint teams from Jamunaha border point returned after patrolling up to Hirminiya, Superintendent of Armed Police Force Janak Raj Basnet said.

Similarly, security arrangements have also been stepped up in Saptari to keep a watch on chaotic elements.

According to Superintendent of Police, Abinarayan Kafle, 1,637 Nepal Police and 3,278 temporary police have been mobilised in the district of the Madhesh Province for the elections. In addition, two mobile security teams have been deployed at each local level. 

Security checking in the district also has been tightened, with the police patrolling along the Nepal-India border areas to prevent the possible supplies of illegal liquor and the incidence of cross-border crimes during the elections. 

Earlier on November 5, the meeting of the coordination committee of officials of the neighbouring districts of the two countries decided to seal the border for 72 hours from November 17 till 12 midnight of November 20.

Chief District Officers of Rupandehi, Kapilvastu and West Nawalparasi of Lumbini province in Nepal, and district magistrates and superintendents of police of India’s Siddharthnagar and Maharajganj districts participated in the coordination meeting.

Rupandehi, Kapilvastu and West Nawalparasi of Lumbini together share a nearly 600km-long open border with the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
