A young Kawasoti man has sustained severe burn injuries after a faith healer thrusted a hot metal rod into his mouth on the pretext of treatment.

The incident came to light nine days later when a video clip of the ‘superstitious ritual’ went viral on social media.

Twenty-year-old Milanjung Kunwar, who was making his living as a rap performer in Kathmandu, returned home sick to his native Kawasoti Municipality-1 in Koilapani, east of Nawalparasi.

Subsequently, his family invited a 42-year-old faith healer, Deepak Sarki, of Devachuli-12, to their home to cure Kunwar with hot-iron branding.

But Kunwar was seriously injured when Sarki repeatedly thrusted the hot rod into his mouth while performing the superstitious ritual in the name of treatment.

The injured Kunwar is receiving treatment at New Medical College in Chitwan, a family source said.

“Sarki was arrested on Friday after the video went viral on social media,” said Deputy Superintendent Santosh Pathak of the District Police Office Nawalpur. The police have launched an investigation into the incident.
